Counting my blessings!

This is a picture of what was nose to nose with my baby today in the front yard. Yes a pitbull! I had imagined this moment happening many times since I learned the neighbors across the street had a pitbull. I've been afraid because stories I had heard on the news, and from Dane stitching up kids at work. Luke and I were getting ready to go for a morning walk. Luke was wandering in the front yard I turned my back for 10 seconds to get the stroller over by the garage. When I turned around I saw a maniac dog running around Luke trying to get him to play. This dog was happy to be free from his back yard and was totally hyper and spazzing. I knew at any moment Luke would be knocked over and used as a chew toy. I can't tell you what went through my head at that moment. But the MOTHER TIGER exploded out of me more than ever. I didn't think of the right thing to do I just ran as fast as I could and swooped up Luke (uninjured) and ran as fast as I could into the front door. As I was running this dog was galloping after me right at my heels. He tried to run right into the house with me as I slammed the door right on his big ol' square nose. Now this is just a playful little puppy right? I was so scared and mad I could hardly handle it. A nice neighbor would have escorted the cuddly little puppy back to his yard. I guess I'm not that nice because I was calling 911 before I caught my breathe. I guess you must realize I've been waiting for this moment, because in the past we have heard of this dog getting out and chasing the other neighbors little dogs like is was going to kill them. Dane and I pondered throwing some poisonous meat over the fence for this sweet little animal because we worried about the kids in the front yard. Before I knew it I was requesting a police officer to come shoot a wild pitbull in my front yard. I can't remember feeling so mad before. The dispatcher said "excuse me?" When the police arrived they were so sweet by telling me that the pittbull is one of the most decorated dog in the nation, and that they get a bad reputation but it isn't true. They are only vicious if they have been mistreated. He went on to say that the chow, and rotwiller(sp?) also are misunderstood. I was really overreacting and should not worry about it. I think I was so comforted by his words smoke was coming out of my ears. I was so mad I didn't say a word. Just walked into my house. Since I don't know if this dog has been mistreated or not I wasn't comforted a bit. This blog is a big fume of my unsaid emotions to the police officer. I doubt he would feel the same if his child had been one of those stories on the news. I think I'm with Denver on this one. OUTLAW pitbulls for pets keep them in controlled settings where there excellent hunting skills can be put to good use. Like hunting for drugs etc. I don't believe the animal is evil, and think people are very oblivious until something bad happens to them. I'm so grateful Luke is perfectly fine, not even a scratch. I'm sure that is such a fun little puppy that I misjudged. I have a mad neighbor at me now too. I'm just grateful!

That is so scary!! You are a great mother. You totally made me laugh with you whole MOTHER TIGER comment. who the stink cares about your neighbor. Good luck getting rid of that dog!! Just tell your neighbor if they want to keep their dog they just have to buy your house!!:)

wow. well, i speak from experience. i have been bitten by a fresno pitbull. :) so, i can understand the fear. i'm sorry that it scared you so much, and i'm glad that luke is okay. i'm not quite as opinionated as you about the outlawing, but i don't have kids yet, so that could very well change. i am just SO glad that nothing bad happened. and...hopefully your neighbor will get over it.

ooohhh ... this is a scary story. Those are scary dogs. i'm glad Luke-man is ok. When I'm on walks with my little one in the stroller I often rehearse in m head what I would do if a dog went after her. MAMA TIGER for sure.

my desire to outlaw pitbulls in not from this experience. Mostly from so many children being attacked in the news, and so many owners not able to handle dogs who are actually bread to kill. When I heard of Denver outlawing them after numerous attacks. I thought to myself that sounds smart. But I'm not ready to march on capital hill yet.

Freaky!

Too bad Chico's not around. He would have DEFINITELY scared off the pit bull, don't you think?

I am glad Luke is okay. You did the right thing. Our next door neighbor has a big dog. I don't know what breed it is. Mckenna is terrified of it. I just don't like how it is always in our yard. I can't wait to get a fence this summer!

I feel the same! For some reason the pit bull is the dog of choice in my ghetto neighborhood. It makes me so angry. I would have done the same thing!
